Modernisation of Winchester College Southern Campus

  • Where – Winchester College’s Southern Campus is located between the playing fields on Kingsgate Park and Norman Road. It is the focus of the school’s indoor sports facilities, and includes the Physical Education Centre (PE Centre), swimming pool, rifle range and squash courts. It is also home to the Works Department, as well as the Design & Technology Department. Although many of the current buildings are of a substantial size, they are largely hidden from the surrounding public roads and wider landscape.
  • Why – the decision to modernise the Southern Campus has been led by the age of the existing PE Centre, which is now over 50 years old. In the 1960s when the PE Centre was built, Winchester College was home to 550 boys, with a handful of sports on offer. Today the school has up to 700 boys and offers a diverse range of nearly 30 sports. The school also opens its doors to the local community where a wide variety of members, clubs and societies enjoy the facilities.
Increased activity has placed an insurmountable demand on an ageing PE Centre which also presents long-term maintenance difficulties. The redevelopment of the site to create a state-of-the-art Sports Centre will allow boys to enjoy and participate in a variety of sports, enable the most talented and driven boys to practice and compete at the highest level and provide much improved facilities for the community to enjoy.
  • What – in order to replace the current PE Centre with modern buildings on a similar footprint, the school will be moving and consolidating parts of the Works Department in to a new Support Services Building. The school will also modernise and extend the Design & Technology Department on the same site. As part of the redevelopment, access and car parking will eventually be relocated and accessed via Norman Road. A residential house will also be added on to Kingsgate Road where access to the existing PE Centre is currently situated.
  • When – The school expects the development to take place in two main phases. Phase 1 is expected to take place between Summer 2018 – Summer 2019, and include the construction of the Support Services Building as well as temporary sports facilities on Kingsgate Park. Phase 2 is expected to begin in Summer 2019 and include the demolition of the existing PE Centre and construction and fit-out of the new sports facilities. Opening of the new Sports Centre is expected to take place in early 2022.

More detailed timings will be updated here following the appointment of a contractor between Spring – Summer 2018.
